Giggles & Hugs…This is what I promise when I mentor you. You’ll also gain reading and math skills. Plus, anything else that you might need help with.



“I’ve tried to abide by this commitment during my nine-year tenure at Riverview East Academy (formerly McKinley Elementary). In return, I am rewarded with immense satisfaction: these second- and third-graders are just plain awesome! Mentoring is also good for us Big Kids. As I am often reminded when I meet these children (sometimes years later) out in the community and a big smile says: ‘ I remember when you helped me…thank you!’



A weekly visit to Riverview means so much to these children who do not have a lot of material possessions nor basic necessities. We can’t imagine the significance of our walk through that schoolroom door nor our smile that says, ‘I love no matter what, and we are going to have a wonderful day...Pull up a little chair next to me!’



But we get a sense through their toothy grins: ‘Yes, I really DO want to learn. Please stay and help me. Be my buddy here at school. I’ll show you: I CAN DO IT!’
