Kilgour's
Tutoring Program
By Victoria Butler
For more than thirty years, Kilgour School has had a volunteer
tutoring program. I joined the program as a tutor when my
daughter was in first grade and have coordinated the program
for fifteen of the last sixteen years.
Our tutors share their love for learning with our students
during the school day and after school. Among the volunteers
are parents, musicians, housewives, business men and women,
teachers, retirees, high school and college students and
peer tutors from the fifth and sixth grades. Some of our
sixth grade peer tutors, Abby Warren, Erin Heiser and Charlotte
Petera, are children from our church. HPCUMC members and
former Kilgour tutors are Kathy Heiser, Erin 's mom, and
Laura Johnson, Charlotte 's mom. Abby's mom, Laura, has
not been a tutor but is an extremely active Kilgour Parent.
In addition to Kilgour students tutoring , we have students
from Summit Country Day, St. Xavier, Saint Ursula, Seven
Hills, Withrow International , Walnut Hills and Purcell-Marian
High Schools .
Some of our tutors are former Kilgour students with ages
ranging from thirteen to seventy seven. The teachers and
students greatly appreciate the volunteers and look forward
to their weekly visits. One of our dearly loved tutors was
the late Jim Bartlett, a longtime HPCUMC member. Jim spent
every Thursday, tutoring students in Math and Science. For
several years, Jim's tutoring day began before school and
ended an hour after school. He loved Kilgour and worked
hard to capture a child's interest and help them to become
successful students. His presence is deeply missed.
With the help of Julie Steimle and Jayne Martin Dressing
from the Cincinnati Reads Program, we have many service
learning students from the University of Cincinnati . Every
volunteer comes to us because they possess unique talents
and gifts which they want to share with our children.
