Cincinnati
Reads/Greater Cincinnati Literacy Network
“Cincinnati Reads” was inspired by an AMOS project
and was launched under the leadership of a few HPCUMC members:
Ronda Deel, Al Harmann and Bob Buechner. The program, which
is now under the umbrella of Literacy Network of Greater
Cincinnati, generally focuses on Cincinnati Public School
students (K - 4th) who are reading below grade level.
Bob Buechner shares his own thoughts and experiences with
this program: "Cincinnati Reads enables volunteers
to interface with young students in a school environment
to help the students become better readers. My personal
experience has been with different students at South Avondale
School . The structure has been different from year to year,
but has always been interesting. One year we worked on reading,
word games, and puzzles. The next year, we worked on reading
for different periods of time over the same text to enable
the student to increase reading speed through familiarity.
The children are delightful, eager to learn and are appreciative
of an adult's time, effort, and commitment."
