Big
Brothers/Big Sisters
By Kent Wellington
You may have heard about three female church members who
delivered more than a Thanksgiving basket to one local family.
A few years back, HPCUMC’s Andrea Slone delivered
a Thanksgiving basket as part of our annual seasonal giving
campaign. However, Andrea didn’t just drop off food,
she also struck up a relationship with one of three sisters
of this single parent household that has had a positive
ripple effect on this family.
Andrea became a mentor to the oldest sister and recruited
two friends and fellow members Joan Thamann and Emily Chesnut
to become mentors to the two younger sisters. For the past
two years, the three mentors have taken their mentorees
on roller skating, bowling and other outings. In turn, the
girls (who attend Mt. Washington Elementary School) have
become regulars at HPCUMC and have participated in church
choirs.
Is this the time in your life when you’re ready to
get involved in mentoring? Call Andrea (513) 924-0117, Joan
(859) 491-3419 and Emily (513) 561-3553 to hear first-hand
what a positive experience this relationship has been for
them. All three will tell you that they have very busy and
active lives . But all agree that the hours they carve to
serve as Big Sisters to these three siblings is time well-spent.
