Mid-Week Contemplative Prayer and Communion Service
“It is in deep solitude that I find the gentleness with which I can truly love my brothers. The more solitary I am the more affection I have for them…. Solitude and silence teach me to love my brothers for what they are, not for what they say.”
--Thomas Merton
Tucked away in the residential setting of Hyde Park exists a tiny chapel that was once prayer space sacred to a community of cloistered sisters. HPCUMC, which now owns the building located at 3020 Erie Avenue, honors the sisters’ rich tradition of contemplation by holding a weekly service in this space.
Participants gather in silence prior to the 8:00 AM opening. Then Scripture readings, common prayer and song mingle with moments of reflection. At closing, all are invited to join at the table to receive Holy Communion and to exchange signs of peace.
All are welcome
to savor the sacramental flavor of this service, which appeals
to a variety of Christian denominations. Services are facilitated
by Kathy Stewart and Bridgitte Waldman-Thomas.
“Receiving Communion has been a priority for me since completing a ‘Walk to Emmaus.’ This service is part of my spiritual journey, especially during Lent.”
